“China has a population of more than 1.3 billion. It is like the big guy in the crowd. Others will naturally wonder how the big guy will move and act, and be concerned that the big guy may push them around, stand in their way or take up their place。” This comes from the speech President Xi Jinping delivered at the Federal Parliament of Australia on Nov. 17.

At the welcome banquet for guests to attend the 22nd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Nov. 10, Xi Jinping said, "These days the first thing I have been doing after getting up in the morning is check how Beijing’s air quality is and hope there is less smog so that all these guests from distant places will feel more comfortable." These words, full of humor and life, narrowed the distance with the guests immediately。

In major diplomatic events, Xi Jinping will deliver China’s voice and express China’s attitude through speeches. His speeches are warm, honorable and composed. He is good at using fabulous analogies and stories, making his speech down-to-earth and have a style of his true self。

Three characteristics of Xi’s speeches

Skill 1 Down-to-earth

A good speaker knows how to narrow the distance with his listeners. Xi Jinping’s speeches just make it. He often uses metaphors and expression full of life to be understood and remembered. These down-to-earth words of masses sound relaxing and refreshing。

At the Meeting Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of China-France Diplomatic Relations on March 27, Xi cited the words of Napoleon and compared China to an “awake lion”. He said, "Now China the lion has awakened, but it is a peaceful, amicable and civilized lion."

At the beginning of the speech at the Federal Parliament of Australia, Xi Jinping said with a smile, "This is the fifth time I set foot on this ancient and vibrant continent of Australia. Since 1988, I have five states and two regions of Australia except Tasmania and I have fond memories of Australia。” After these words full of life, Xi became closer to the Australian people. It is no wonder that Xi Jinping is reputed by the Australian media as “the Chinese leader that knows Australia best”。

When it comes to the international community’s concern for China’s rise, Xi Jinping said humorously, “China has a population of more than 1.3 billion. It is like the big guy in the crowd. Others will naturally wonder how the big guy will move and act, and be concerned that the big guy may push them around, stand in their way or take up their place. ”

Skill 2 Storytelling

A evocative story is often able to strike upon the audiences’ heart. During Xi’s visit to the United States on February 15, 2012, he told a story in a speech in Washington. Xi said, “In the spring of 1992, when I was working in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, I came across an article titled “Ah, Drum Ridge!” in the newspaper. The article tells a story how an American couple missed and yearned for a place called “Drum Ridge” in China. They wanted to go back but didn’t make it.”

“In August of 1992, I met Mrs. Gardner met and helped her back to Drum Ridge, where her husband had so many fond memories. There Mrs. Garner met nine 90-year-old childhood playmates of her husband. She felt so happy to reminisce about old times with them. Mrs. Gardner said excitedly that her husband’s wishes eventually came true. The beautiful Drum Ridge and warm Chinese people made her better understand why her husband loved China so deeply. I believe, moving stories like that still have a lot between Chinese and Americans. We should further strengthen exchanges between the two peoples to reinforce the public opinion foundation of mutually beneficial cooperation between China and the US。” The story helped narrow the distance between the Chinese and American people。

Skill 3 Show confidence

Confidence and calmness are the essential qualities of a good speaker.

From March 22 to 30 last year, Xi Jinping visited Russia, Tanzania, South Africa, Congo and attended the fifth meeting of the leaders of the BRIC countries held in Durban, South Africa. This is the first visit of China’s top leader after the 18th CCP Congress and the NPC and CPPCC.

While delivering speeches in the Moscow Institute of International Relations and at the Congolese parliament, Xi Jinping was gentle, relaxed and natural in the media spotlight. He also added a lot of his own thinking and words on the spot, and interacted with the audience on the scene. Xi The international community was deeply impressed by Xi’s new style of confidence and calmness.

This style can be found everywhere. On November 9, 2014, Xi Jinping said at the APEC CEO Summit, “A great era calls for a great vision, which in turn requires great wisdom. The prospects of Asia-Pacific region depend on today’s decisions and actions. We have responsibilities to create and realize Asia-Pacific dreams for people of the whole region. "

When he calmly announced that “China will put $ 40 billion into a special New Silk Road fund which provides financing support to carry out infrastructure, resources, industrial cooperation, and other projects related to connectivity for countries along the "Belt and Road", the audience burst into warm applause. Public opinion analysts believe that this once again demonstrates the leading role of China.

Some critics said that the statement of Xi was confident and calm, from which we can feel that China is becoming more confident and emboldened to voice in the international arena.
